Fire Preparedness for RentersSometimes accidents happen that we have no control over. While you want to make sure that you are covered with the best Renters Insurance in Illinois, being prepared in the event of disaster can make a huge difference in your safety as well as getting back on your feet after. Here are some ways to help make sure that you are prepared in the event that a fire breaks out in your rental home.

Plan Ahead

  • Even before you sign the papers to rent your new home, be sure that the building is up to code. Look for smoke alarms, fire alarms, see where fire extinguishers are kept and make sure that emergency exits are accessible.
  • Plan out fire escape routes for all family members. Have at least two available exit strategies. Have a spot away from the building that you and you family can meet up. Practice with the family to make sure everyone is aware of what to do.
  • Make sure to keep all hallways and doorways clear of clutter that may block escape routes. Keep your balcony free of excess plants, toys and other items. Never barbeque in an enclosed space.
  • Be aware of neighbors that may need assistance in the event of a fire. Direct rescue crews to apartments where someone may need help when they arrive. Do not go back into the building.
  • Create an inventory of items within your household. Take pictures or video of your belongings. Update your household inventory every couple of years or when a large purchase is made.
  • Check your insurance plan. Know what coverage you have and what your landlord is responsible for vs. what you are responsible for. Make sure to have your insurance agent’s contact information in a safe accessible place so you can easily get to it in the event of a fire.

After a Fire

  • Do not enter the building until authorized by authorities.
  • Contact your insurance company to start the claims process.
  • Walk through and separate damaged items from undamaged items.
